Cole is an ordinary, likable man whose life has taken a dark turn after witnessing a horrific murder-suicide. Since that traumatic event, everything has spiraled downward: his wife has left him, he is plagued by disturbing hallucinations, and his once-promising career has collapsed into a menial job with a carpet cleaning company. Just as he hits rock bottom, Cole is dispatched to an overnight cleaning assignment at an Italianate mansion located far from the city. Accompanying him is Henry, the wealthy and condescending homeowner, who seems to derive cruel amusement from making Cole believe he may have just killed his wife.
